Things To Watch For During The Holidays

The Christmas season may be one of the few times we get to visit our parents if we live far away and rely primarily on the phone to communicate with them. It’s not uncommon for us to notice changes from year to year in our parents as they age.  Sometimes these changes are signals that their traditional house may not be the best environment for them.

We notice that our parents aren’t eating very well. They’ve lost weight or their refrigerator and cupboards are not filled with nutritious foods.  We may also notice that they have several bottles of partially taken medication which indicates that they’re not remembering to take their prescriptions the way they’re supposed to.  We may notice that the house is cluttered and not clean and the yard is not maintained.  We may also notice more severe signals such as confusion, poor hygiene, depression, unexplained bruising which can indicate falls and dents or scratches on the car.   Many times these signs can signal it’s time to consider an alternative living solution.

At John Knox Village East, we can help provide a supportive environment for people to keep them safe and independent.  We provide nutritious meals, medication delivery, housekeeping and transportation.  These supportive services allow people to stay healthy and safe.  The lifestyle we provide helps provide a fit for people now, as well as into the future as they age.

As we meet with people who are considering making a change in their living arrangements, it’s not uncommon to hear about the signals listed above. Many times these changes are more noticeable if a significant period of time has passed since you last saw your parent.  Being in a retirement community can help identify these changes more quickly as there are friends, neighbors and professionals around to help monitor changes in behavior and health and head the causes off before they become more severe.

While this is a happy time of year as we celebrate the holidays, take a little extra time and see if your parents or grandparents are in need of more help than they were last year at this time. They could be showing signs of needing a more supportive environment.
